Adoption Process

Adoption Process

  1. Search available pets at your local shelter - There are listings online with descriptions of each animal that is available for adoptions.
  2. Visit your local shelter - Seeing an animal’s photo is not enough to choose your perfect pet. Going in and seeing the animal in person is necessary to see how they are in person.
  3. Set up a time for meet and greets - Setting up a time with the shelter so you can meet the animal personally is crucial. Being able to be alone with an animal will show you how they react to you. If you have other pets, you may also bring them in to meet the potential pet. This is also a great time to ask questions about the pet with shelter staff.
  4. Fill out application - Filling out an application can take some time, or no time at all. Different shelters ask for different information. At SCHS, we ask for references and for you to fill out our application that is specific to the animal you want to adopt.
  5. Shelter Application Process
  6. Process being completed
  7. After your application has been accepted - Different shelters take different amounts of time to accept application and to give you your new adopted pet.

Why We Charge Fees

SCHS is a private non-profit organization and is NOT funded by any tax dollars. The adoption, surrender, impound and cremation fees we charge you help us to....

• Feed the animals in our care
• Provide medications and medical care for injured and sick animals
• Pay our trained and professional staff a fair wage
• Provide a safe, clean and healthy environment for the animals until they are adopted
• Maintain the vehicles we use to pick up animals in need
• Pay our electric, gas, water, phone, Internet, trash collection, insurance and other operating expenses
• Heat our shelter in the winter and keep it cool in the summer
• Keep our grounds inviting and clean and provide play space for the animals while they stay here

Thank you for helping us help the homeless animals in our county by understanding our need to charge.

We ask you to support our fundraisers and donate when you can.
